I’m so grateful Jesus didn’t leave us here to figure things out on our own and sent the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit has many roles, one of them being our advocate. An advocate is a pleader in a court of law; a lawyer. He’s our lawyer that speaks in our defense because we don’t always know what to say. (Luke 12:11- for the Holy Spirit will give you the right words even as you are standing there.”) Jesus wanted the disciples to know that they didn’t have to be concerned about what to say when they were arrested and brought to trial.
On the day of Pentecost when the believers were filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in languages they didn’t know people thought they were drunk. This gave Peter an opportunity to share the Gospel with them. (Acts 2:37- These words of Peter’s moved them deeply, and they said to him and to the other apostles, “Brothers, what should we do?”) 3,000 people believed and were baptized after he preached and told them about Jesus. The Holy Spirit knew exactly what the people needed to hear and spoke through Peter in a way that would prick their heart.
God is looking for yielded vessels, people who are available for Him to use. This is why it’s important to be at the right place at the right time. In Acts 8 an angel instructed Philip to go to the Gaza Desert where he met a eunuch. (Acts 8:29- The Holy Spirit said to Philip, “Go over and walk along beside the chariot.”) The eunuch was reading from the book of Isaiah but he didn’t understand it. Philip helped him understand what he was reading, told him about Jesus and he believed and was baptized in Jesus’ name. Philip was yielded to the Holy Spirit and He knew exactly what to say.
When you have an opportunity to tell someone about Jesus don’t worry about what to say, the Holy Spirit will give you the right words at the right time. (Matthew 10:20- For it won’t be you doing the talking—it will be the Spirit of your heavenly Father speaking through you!)
