Devotional For The Week Of 2/18/19- Surrounded

I’m sure you’ve had a moment where it feels like your world is crashing down around you, when your entire outlook, circumstances, or lifestyle are negatively affected or altered by things happening in your life. When this happens there are two choices you can make: believe things will never get better or choose to have faith even when it feels like your life is falling apart. Things may not change right away but faith changes your attitude and how you view your circumstances. “If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.”

In 2 King’s 6, Elisha had been warning the King of Israel about the Syrians plans to attack them and the King of Syria was furious. One night he sent a great army with many chariots and horses to surround the city. When Elisha’s servant got up early the next morning and went outside, there were troops, horses, and chariots everywhere. (2 King’s 6:16- “Don’t be afraid!” Elisha told him. “For our army is bigger than theirs!”) Many times in the Bible God tells people “Don’t be afraid” because He wants them to have faith in Him. (2 King’s 6:17- Then Elisha prayed, “Lord, open his eyes and let him see!” And the Lord opened the young man’s eyes so that he could see horses of fire and chariots of fire everywhere upon the mountain!) Elisha prayed for his servant’s eyes to be opened so he could see what God was doing. He wanted his servant to know there was no need to fear. Instead of worrying about your circumstances, look at God, the One who can change them. It looked like they were surrounded by the enemy, but they were surrounded by God. Elisha’s servant could’ve continued to fear that they’d be apprehended by the Syrians or have faith in God. He chose the latter and God protected them.

The Spirit of God lives in you and He’s all around you. (Psalm 3:3- But you, LORD, are a shield around me, my glory, the One who lifts my head high.) (Psalm 139:5- You both precede and follow me and place your hand of blessing on my head.) (Psalm 16:8- I have set the Lord always before me: because He is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.) God’s Word reassures you that you’re never alone and He’s always with you. Don’t be afraid, He is bigger than anything you may be facing. “What do you regularly tell yourself about yourself, God and your circumstances? Do your words to yourself encourage faith, hope, and courage? Or do they stimulate doubt, discouragement, and fear?”

Remember that you’re surrounded by God and He fights your battles for you, all you have to do is have faith.
