Devotional For The Week of 4/30/18- Peculiar People

(1 Peter 2:9- But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of Him who hath called you out of darkness into His marvellous light)

God makes us different on purpose. Peculiar means belonging exclusively to, He wants people to know that Christ is what makes us different, even if we don’t know it yet. Growing up I always wondered why I never really fit in with people. I was “cool” with people, but they weren’t actually my friends. It wasn’t until I gave my life to Christ that I realized He set me apart for a reason. Set apart means to keep or save for a particular purpose, to separate from others. We are set apart to be lights of the world. (John 8:12- Later, in one of His talks, Jesus said to the people, “I am the Light of the world. So if you follow me, you won’t be stumbling through the darkness, for living light will flood your path.”) Like a deer without headlights, the unsaved are stumbling through the darkness. The saved have light that shines as they walk and it’s our job to shine our light so the unsaved can get out of the dominion of darkness and into the dominion of God. (Ephesians 5:8- For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light.) When people see you they should say “there’s something different about you” and want to know what it is so you can point them to Christ. “Many people won’t read their Bibles, but they’ll read you, so reflect God in everything you do.” You may be the only version of the Bible people read. Ask yourself: What are people reading when they read me? (Matthew 5:13-16- “You are the world’s seasoning, to make it tolerable. If you lose your flavor, what will happen to the world? And you yourselves will be thrown out and trampled underfoot as worthless. You are the world’s light—a city on a hill, glowing in the night for all to see. Don’t hide your light! Let it shine for all; let your good deeds glow for all to see, so that they will praise your heavenly Father.)

Another definition of peculiar is weird, but there’s nothing weird about living for God. In a world that has nothing to offer you but damnation, I’m glad to be set apart and on the winning team with the Lord. Everything that society encourages you to do is most likely against what the Bible tells us to do. That’s why we must renew our minds and not conform to what everyone else is doing. “Everyone else can drink” “Everyone else can smoke” My parents always told us that we’re not “everyone else” and now I finally understand what that means. God didn’t put us here to be like everyone else, He put us here to show everyone else that living in darkness leads you to hell and being a light by living for God leads you to heaven. We are in the world, but not of the world. We are a peculiar people so praise God for bringing you out of darkness and into the light.

For anyone reading this who wants to come out of darkness and into the light I want to let you know that it’s not easy. You need to pray for God to deliver you from whatever you’re struggling with and help you no longer desire to do it. You have to unlearn basically everything that you’ve been taught. (Romans 12:2- Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but be a new and different person with a fresh newness in all you do and think. Then you will learn from your own experience how His ways will really satisfy you.)
