There’s no Bible verse that says “come as you are” but the Bible does say draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Many people use that phrase to defend their lifestyle, but no one should leave God’s presence the same way. Yes, God does want you to come as you are, but He doesn’t want you to stay the same. God is a holy God and as you draw near to Him you’ll begin to change because you’ll realize how sinful you are. As you draw near to Him your speech, attitude, and behavior won’t be the same.
Another phrase that’s commonly used is “God knows my heart”. Yes, God knows your heart and Jeremiah 17:9 says, “the heart is deceitful above all things.” Instead of saying "God knows your heart" ask Him to reveal to you how wicked your heart is, to help your heart’s desires become His desires, to cleanse you so that you can live a life that’s pleasing to Him.
For some reason, we try to find a convenient time to give our lives to Christ, but TODAY is the day of salvation. Jesus didn’t die for us on a day that was convenient for Him. He was beaten, ridiculed and left to die on the cross. God turned His back on Him, He was in agony and pain, but He still did it. (John 12:32- And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me.) He died for us at the perfect time to bring us back to God.
I used to tell myself I’d get saved when I got married or was a little older, for some reason I thought it’d be easier, but boy was I fooled. Changing your life for God isn’t easy no matter your age, marital status, etc, but it’s definitely worth it. People say “I’ll give my life to Christ when I stop doing *insert sin here*” but if you draw near to Him now, He will help you stop doing *insert sin here*” and help you no longer desire it. Draw near to Him now, you will never overcome by your own strength.
So many people think they have to be perfect to come to Christ, but if we were perfect we wouldn’t need a Savior. Please don’t think you’re too dirty to be clean. Jesus is ready to give you new garments. (Psalm 51:7- Sprinkle me with the cleansing blood and I shall be clean again. Wash me and I shall be whiter than snow.) Nothing but the blood of Jesus can wash away your sins.
You are as close to God as you desire to be. If you want to get to know Him more you have to seek Him. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. There was a time when only certain people could draw near to Him, but because of what Jesus did on the cross now anyone can have fellowship with God. (Ephesians 3:12- Now we can come fearlessly right into God’s presence, assured of His glad welcome when we come with Christ and trust in Him.) Choose to draw near to God today because none of us are promised tomorrow.
