Ready For Commitment

When people get married they’re not just playing house, they have an agreement dedicating themselves to their spouse. They have an obligation to them that restricts freedom of action. They are committed. Some synonyms to commitment are dedication, devotion, allegiance, loyalty and faithfulness. God doesn’t want us playing church. When we accept Jesus as Lord and Savior we vow to be committed to Him. If we’re in, we have to be all in. If we’re not ready for commitment, we can’t be His bride.

Luke 18:18-23

The Jewish religious leader obeyed the ten commandments, but there was still one thing he lacked, he wasn’t ready to be committed to Jesus. One definition for follow is to go along (a route or path). The man wasn’t ready to leave the path he was on to pursue the one Jesus was on. He was fine with religion (obeying the rules he was taught as a child), but he wasn’t ready to give up everything for Jesus.

Matthew 10:37-39

Jesus was letting the disciples know what it means to be faithful to Him. Anyone’s who’s faithful to God can’t love anyone/anything more than Him including their life. Our commitment to God is shown when we give up our life for Him. (1 John 15:12-13- I demand that you love each other as much as I love you. And here is how to measure it—the greatest love is shown when a person lays down his life for his friends;) Jesus loves us so much that He gave up His life for us. He gave up everything for us, but are we willing to give up everything for Him? Are we committed to Him like we say we are?

Matthew 13:44-46

1. What does it mean to be devoted to God?

Being devoted to God means to give Him our all. It’s spending time with Him daily not out of obligation, but because we love Him.

Luke 9:57-62

It costs to follow Jesus. Following Him means that our life is dedicated to Him and it’s no longer our own.

1 Samuel 1

Hannah made a commitment that if God blessed her with a son she’d give him back to God. When she had Samuel, she left him at the Tabernacle for God to use. This is an example of what happens when we get saved. We give our life (that was never our own) back to God for Him to use. (1 Corinthians 6:19-20- Haven’t you yet learned that your body is the home of the Holy Spirit God gave you, and that He lives within you? Your own body does not belong to you. For God has bought you with a great price. So use every part of your body to give glory back to God because He owns it.)
