1. Why is faith so important?
Faith is so important because it’s by God’s grace, through faith that people are saved. It takes faith to believe that there is a God and that He sent His Son Jesus to die on the cross for us. Even after we get saved it takes faith to trust in God despite our circumstances. Salvation doesn’t guarantee a perfect life, God will test our faith just to see if we’ll trust Him or not.
2. Why is it important not to be controlled by your emotions?
Emotions are a natural instinctive state of mind deriving from one's circumstances, mood, or relationships with others. Our circumstances, moods and the way people make us feel are constantly changing and just because we go through something doesn’t mean that how we’re feeling during that time will remain forever. It’s important not to be controlled by our emotions because we should be led by the Holy Spirit. (Galatians 5:22- But when the Holy Spirit controls our lives He will produce this kind of fruit in us: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control; and here there is no conflict with Jewish laws.)
The Israelites were frightened when they saw the Egyptians coming and Moses told them not to be afraid because God was going to rescue them. Faith is trusting God no matter what’s going on around you. They were frightened, but it took faith for them to walk through the sea on dry land as the Egyptians chased them.
1 Kings 17
God will give us the resources we need. He used ravens to feed Elijah and then sent him to Zarephath to make sure he was taken care of. The woman had to feed Elijah and knew there was only enough food for one last meal. It took faith for her to believe that her and her son would have plenty of food, just as the Lord promised.
(Philippians 4:6-7- Do not be anxious or worried about anything, but in everything [every circumstance and situation] by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, continue to make your [specific] requests known to God. And the peace of God [that peace which reassures the heart, that peace] which transcends all understanding, [that peace which] stands guard over your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus [is yours].) God’s peace surpasses understanding. The peace He gives us exceeds the norm.
They were on the verge of death and Jesus was sleeping. He asked them what they were afraid of and why they didn’t have faith. When your faith is over your circumstances you view life differently. We serve a God who can change our circumstances, choose to have faith despite what you’re feeling.
3. What did you get out of today’s lesson?
This is just a reminder to have faith no matter what you’re feeling. As you read the Bible you realize that God has promised us many things. Meditate on His promises and have faith that they will come to pass.
