The Devil Didn't Make You Do It

1.   When you think of the devil what’s the first thing that comes to mind?

The first thing that comes to my mind is that he’s defeated. A lot of people have this misconception of the devil and think that him and God are in competition, but the devil BEEN defeated and God just uses him to weed out the people who don’t want Him. People like to blame the devil when they sin, but he can’t make us do anything, all he can do is tempt us.

Genesis 3:1-6

Matthew 4:1-11

(James 4:7- Submit yourselves then to God, resist temptation and the devil will flee.) The difference between Adam/Eve and Jesus is that they wanted to please themselves and Jesus wanted to please/obey God.

Romans 5:12-19

We live in a fallen world because of what Adam did and even though Jesus defeated death this world is still evil. Satan is the evil prince of this world and that’s why society is so against God. A lot of people think that everyone is a child of God, but unfortunately that’s not true, some people are in the dominion of darkness, meaning they are children of the devil.  (1 John 5:19- We know that we are children of God and that all the rest of the world around us is under Satan’s power and control.) (Acts 26:18- to open their eyes to their true condition so that they may repent and live in the light of God instead of in Satan’s darkness, so that they may receive forgiveness for their sins and God’s inheritance along with all people everywhere whose sins are cleansed away, who are set apart by faith in me.’)

1 John 2:3-6

Before I got saved I was living in spiritual darkness. I would call myself a Christian but deep down if I died I knew I was going to hell. It's not just about saying we're Christians, it's about living like Christ. As Christians it's important to examine ourselves and really make sure we’re living a life that’s pleasing to God. We can’t love the things of this world and love God. (1 John 2:15-16- Stop loving this evil world and all that it offers you, for when you love these things you show that you do not really love God; for all these worldly things, these evil desires—the craze for sex, the ambition to buy everything that appeals to you, and the pride that comes from wealth and importance—these are not from God. They are from this evil world itself.)

3.   What’s one word that describes our flesh?

Our flesh is rebellious and wants to do the opposite of what God wants us to do. (Galatians 5:17- For we naturally love to do evil things that are just the opposite from the things that the Holy Spirit tells us to do; and the good things we want to do when the Spirit has his way with us are just the opposite of our natural desires. These two forces within us are constantly fighting each other to win control over us, and our wishes are never free from their pressures.) The devil isn’t always to blame when we fall short sometimes it’s just our flesh.

4.   What do you do when you’re tempted?

When I'm tempted I pray and remind myself that sin is never worth it. I cast down the thought and replace it with the Word of God. (2 Corinthians 10:5- Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of God.) Don’t wait until you’re tempted to pray, we should constantly be in prayer so that when temptation comes we’re able to resist it.

(Matthew 26:41- Keep alert and pray. Otherwise temptation will overpower you. For the spirit indeed is willing, but how weak the body is!”) Our spirit will always want to please God and our flesh will always want to please itself which is why it’s important for us to allow the Holy Spirit to lead our lives.

5.   What’s 1 reason why you personally need to allow the Holy Spirit to lead your life?

I need to allow the Holy Spirit to lead my life because I get angry fast which leads me to being mean or saying a bad word. It’s not a sin to be angry, but the Bible says in your anger do not sin.

Galatians 5:16-26

6.   Check out the video below. What did you think about that? What stood out to you?

It’s important for us to truly understand what our flesh is. It’s not just something that’s apart of our body, it’s something that needs to be put to death. We need to kill our flesh before it kills us.

This is just a reminder that the devil can only tempt us and can’t make us do anything. It’s important for us to feed our spirit and kill our flesh so that we can live a life that’s pleasing to God. We’re in the world but not of the world, our only job here on earth is to bring glory to God.
