This life isn’t just about making a name for yourself, it’s about making God known. God doesn’t just give us talents to bring us glory, He gives us talents to bring glory to His name. Ask yourself: Does my life glorify God?
(Psalm 115:1- Glorify your name, not ours, O Lord! Cause everyone to praise your loving-kindness and your truth.)
What is 1 example of how we can glorify God?
One thing we have to remember is that God doesn’t need us to praise Him, if we won’t someone else will. Jesus said “if they keep quiet, the stones along the road will burst into cheers.”
2. (Watch the video below.) What did y’all think about that? What stood out to you?
It’s easy to say you love God and you love people but can you do what Francis Chan did? “This house is actually too big for us, let’s sell it and go live in a trailer.” People like Francis Chan are called radical Christians, but the decision to follow Christ is itself a call to radical living. When you get saved you have to renew your mind, you have to unlearn so many things that society said is okay and people will think you’re crazy. ( Romans 12:2- Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but be a new and different person with a fresh newness in all you do and think. Then you will learn from your own experience how His ways will really satisfy you.)
If you really want to be used by God, you have to understand that your life is not your own, this life is bigger than you and me.
(Matthew 16:24-26- Then Jesus said to the disciples, “If anyone wants to be a follower of mine, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For anyone who keeps his life for himself shall lose it; and anyone who loses his life for me shall find it again. What profit is there if you gain the whole world—and lose eternal life? What can be compared with the value of eternal life?)
Before I got saved I was in a relationship for a year. Right after I got saved God kept tell me I had to breakup with the guy because we were unequally yoked. I tried to ignore Him, but I couldn't because I kept seeing the scripture (2Corinthians 6:14- Don’t be teamed with those who do not love the Lord, for what do the people of God have in common with the people of sin? How can light live with darkness?) everywhere. It wasn't easy to end it but I knew that if I couldn't let go of my past I was going to miss out on what God has for me.
Lot’s wife is a representation of someone who can’t give up their old life to begin a new life in Christ. She wasn’t just looking back to see what was happening, she was looking back because she really didn’t want to give up her past. Last week I saw a tweet that said “Some of y’all are cheating on your future with your past. God wants to take you to your future, but when He tries, you look back to see what your past says. By doing that your future is delayed by your past and it’s time to let that go.” You can’t start the next chapter of your life if you keep rereading the last. Let’s be honest though how many of us look back at our life before Christ and wish we could do certain things just one more time? “That still looks fun” “One more time won’t hurt” Those are the lies the devil tells you to get you to sin, then backslide and eventually leave God. Here are some examples to show that it’s not as fun as it looks and that one last time can hurt you.
2 Peter 2:19-22
1 John 3:4-11
I was talking to one of my sisters in Christ and she told me that she’s addicted to sex. I gave her some advice and asked her if she had some Christian friends. She told me she has a youth group she really likes, but hasn’t told them anything about that because she was ashamed. I told her to find at least one person she can confide in and that she has me, but it’s also good to talk to someone in person too. The next day she told me she told them at youth group and felt really good about it? (James 5:16- Admit your faults to one another and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The earnest prayer of a righteous man has great power and wonderful results.)
3. What areas in your life are you still tempted? What are you struggling with? This isn’t to judge but to be honest and help our brothers/sisters in Christ.
One person who knew from the very beginning that this is bigger than Him was Jesus. We should strive to be like Him because He constantly gave God the glory and put God first.
It’s so easy to say “God, I want your will done in my life”, but once He tells us something we don’t want to hear we get upset. “Don’t date Him” “Don’t take that job” etc. All of a sudden you’re not sure if you’re hearing God correctly, He wasn’t talking to you, that was for somebody else and the list goes on. We have to remember that God knows what’s best for us, even when He tells us to do something we don’t want to do. (Romans 8:28- And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to His purpose.) A lot of people love the beginning of this verse not realizing that if you aren’t living for God whether you’re famous or rich, things can be going well for you on earth, but where you go after death is what matter. Things can be going well for you in the natural and you can be spiritually dying. (Romans 3:17- “You say, ‘I am rich, with everything I want; I don’t need a thing!’ And you don’t realize that spiritually you are wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked.)
When you don’t want to pray remember that this is bigger than me, when you don’t want to fast remember that this is bigger than me and when you don’t want to evangelize remember that this is bigger than me and someone in need is waiting on the other side of your obedience. This is just a reminder for us to remember that this is bigger than us and that our life is not our own and we need to make sure it glorifies God.
4. What did you learn from today’s lesson?
