One thing the devil loves to do is bring up your past. Once he sees you’re trying to better yourself he will start attacking you. So many people don’t know how the devil operates and one thing that he loves to do is attack your mind. He will bring up the sins you used to do, bring up bad memories etc, anything he can do to make you feel guilty or even crazy. What we need to remember is that when we get saved we are now a new person. (2 Corinthians 5:17- When someone becomes a Christian, he becomes a brand new person inside. He is not the same anymore. A new life has begun!) So many people are afraid to commit to God because of their past or because they aren't perfect but God uses imperfect people. I used to smoke, drink, disrespect my parents, have sex before marriage etc and now God is using me to bring people closer to Him. It’s not about your past it’s about what you do with your future.
Moses told the Lord that he wasn’t fit for a job like that, but when God gives us a task He always equips us with what we need. Moses had killed someone before but God wasn’t worried about his past, He was worried about his future, which was Moses going to help His people.
Jesus didn’t care that that woman was a prostitute, He told her to go but not just go but to go and sin no more. Jesus came to save sinners, so yes we all were sinners before we got saved but now we live for God. Sometimes you listen to people’s testimonies and say well sheesh they were that bad or you look back at your own life and are like wow I was terrible, but it just reminds you of how much mercy God has on us.
So Paul was terrible before his encounter with God, but even though he tortured and imprisoned Christians God still used him. (1 Timothy 1:15-16- How true it is, and how I long that everyone should know it, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—and I was the greatest of them all.)
Let’s always remember that we aren’t good enough because of our works but because of what Jesus did for us on the cross. (Romans 3:10-12- As the Scriptures say, “No one is good—no one in all the world is innocent.” No one has ever really followed God’s paths or even truly wanted to. Every one has turned away; all have gone wrong. No one anywhere has kept on doing what is right; not one.)
If salvation was based on how good people were no one would go to Heaven because we’re all rotten whether we believe it or not. Thankfully even though we were sinners God still made a way for us through Jesus.
So even though we’re good enough to come to God and be used by Him we should remember that just because you’ve been delivered from something doesn’t mean that you can’t still be tempted and fall short. We should always stay prayed up and not just wait until we’re tempted to pray that we won’t fall short. If your prayer life is weak and you don’t spend much time with God your flesh will be weak too and you’ll always give in.
(Matthew 12:43-45- “This evil nation is like a man possessed by a demon. For if the demon leaves, it goes into the deserts for a while, seeking rest but finding none. Then it says, ‘I will return to the man I came from.’ So it returns and finds the man’s heart clean but empty! Then the demon finds seven other spirits more evil than itself, and all enter the man and live in him. And so he is worse off than before.”) You can always get delivered but the key is staying delivered, the devil is going to bring your past back to memory, he’s going to try to get you to go back to your old life, but don’t it’s not worth it. (Revelation 12:11- They defeated him by the blood of the Lamb and by their testimony; for they did not love their lives but laid them down for Him.) Your testimony is the story of how you became a Christian, it’s what God did in your life and what God has delivered you from to free you from the bondage you were in. Remember that we don’t get freed from sin to be right back in bondage again. Christ has made us free so make sure that you stay free and don’t get all tied up again in the chains of slavery. Remember that you can’t fight this battle alone you need the Holy Spirit’s help.
(1 John 5:4-5- for every child of God can obey him, defeating sin and evil pleasure by trusting Christ to help him. But who could possibly fight and win this battle except by believing that Jesus is truly the Son of God?)
God says that you're good enough. He doesn't care about your past He just wants to mold you into perfection. Don't listen to the devil's lies if God says you're good enough then you are good enough. So many people think they have to be perfect before they give their life to God, but if we were perfect we wouldn’t need salvation. You can’t change the past but you can change your future. We all had a past before Christ but what matters is what we do with our future. When Satan reminds you of your past just remind him of his future. You may have those "friends" who say slick things to you about getting saved but real friends would be uplifting you not putting you down. “Well you used to do this or used to do that”, yes but the keyword is used to. Don't let anyone call you a hypocrite for choosing to give your life to God, your past is your past you're now a new creation in Christ. Sometimes people honestly don’t believe you when you tell them you’re saved now, they’ll still try to invite you to do things you no longer do because they just don’t understand that God really changes people for the better. (2 Corinthians 5:14-16- Since we believe that Christ died for all of us, we should also believe that we have died to the old life we used to live. He died for all so that all who live—having received eternal life from him—might live no longer for themselves, to please themselves, but to spend their lives pleasing Christ who died and rose again for them. So stop evaluating Christians by what the world thinks about them or by what they seem to be like on the outside.)
You don’t have to try to convince people that you’re saved either, your lifestyle can show people Christ without you ever mentioning Him. People will see a glow and change and ask you what’s different about you and you can say God.
A couple months ago at church the pastor gave a good example about the past. He said when it’s time to update your computer you have to shut it down and it’s the same with when you get saved. People keep trying to drag their past to their future but you have to shutdown and start fresh. Not all of your past can come to your future. It’s time to update. The angels said “flee for your lives and don’t look back” Lot’s wife looked back and died. Let’s not be quick to judge her though because how many times in your life does God tell you to leave something/someone alone and you don’t? You know James 4:7 says resist temptation and the devil will flee yet you continue to play with sin as though you won’t be tempted. God doesn’t give us instructions just for fun, He gives them to us so that we’ll be okay.
At church on Sunday the pastor mentioned (James 5:16- Admit your faults to one another and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The earnest prayer of a righteous man has great power and wonderful results.) He told us that we will always be as sick as our secrets, that we need to find believers that we can tell our issues to. The enemy will use any problem you have against you, telling other people is good because you’d be surprised at how many people may be dealing with the same thing or already have dealt with it. Many times we mess up and we start condemning ourselves and the guilt eats us up. We just have to remember that there is no condemnation for those in Christ. Just because we may slip up doesn’t mean that we’re not good enough for God to use us.
