What Does It Mean To Truly Fear God?

God fearing means to have a reverent feeling towards God. Reverent means to show deep respect. Most of the time when people hear that you fear God they think of it as a negative thing instead of a positive thing. "If God loves me what do I need to fear Him for" but we fear God because He is our father. Think about when you were a kid there was certain things you didn't do out of respect for your parents and because you were scared of what they might do to you. It's the same thing with God when Christians say that they're God fearing it means that they have much respect for God. There's certain things I don't do anymore because I know God hates it and I know that sin comes with repercussions.

2 Samuel 11
So David had sex with a married woman and not only did he do that but she got pregnant and he tried to cover it up by getting the woman's husband to sleep with her, but it doesn't even end there, he had the man killed when his plan to cover it up didn't work. So now the man is dead and what does David do? He ends up marrying her. The Bible says the Lord was very displeased with what David had done.

2 Samuel 12:1-25
Many times we think that we're getting away with sin and God is just like "okay bet you just wait" Just because God didn't punish you right away doesn't mean that the judgment isn't coming. Just think about it, say you pointed a gun at someone and right after you pulled the trigger you said sorry. Okay you said sorry but that doesn't stop the fact that the gun already went off and the damage is done. One thing I like about David in this situation is that when he realized his son was dead he wasn't even mad at God. He just moved on. Many times when bad things happen to us even when it's our fault we curse and get mad at God. Well how are you going to get mad at God when He had nothing to do with it? Also, how can you get mad at God when you're the reason that this happened?

Everyone knows that David was a man after God's own heart. When David sinned against God he felt terrible. Just reading Psalms you know that David was sorry for what he had done. When we're truly sorry for sinning we're grieved because we know that God is upset and we love God and don't want Him to be unhappy with us. Before we got saved we didn't fear God because if we did we wouldn't have been out there doing the stuff that we did. Of course we read about David and say wow he was horrible but what were we before we came to Christ? Were we good? No.
Romans 2:1-8

Many people don't realize that being ungrateful can be a sin. God does many things for us and yet people still complain. They complain about their job, but what if they didn't have one? They complain about their car, but what if they didn't have one? God saved the Israelites from Pharaoh and yet they still found things to complain about.

1 John 4:9-19
When you're living right you don't have to worry about God's punishment but when you're living in sin please know that just because something bad hasn't happened yet it is definitely coming. (Ecclesiastes 8:11-Because God does not punish sinners instantly, people feel it is safe to do wrong.) I know people now who are like "yeah I know I need to stop doing xyz but I'll wait until something bad happens to stop" And I'm just like, look it took something bad happening to me for me to want to get right with God and you definitely don't want something bad happening to you. God gives us wake up calls so that we can turn back to Him, but not everyone wakes back up from their wake up call. Why wait for something bad to happen to you and then end up dying before you can even get right with God?

I love Proverbs because it talks about wisdom and how to get it.
(Proverbs 1:7- How does a man become wise? The first step is to trust and reverence the Lord! ) (Proverbs 1:29-31- "For you closed your eyes to the facts and did not choose to reverence and trust the Lord, and you turned your back on me, spurning my advice. That is why you must eat the bitter fruit of having your own way and experience the full terrors of the pathway you have chosen.) (Proverbs 10:27- Reverence for God adds hours to each day; so how can the wicked expect a long, good life?)(Proverbs 14:27- Reverence for the Lord is a fountain of life; its waters keep a man from death.) If you want to be wise you must reverence the Lord. When you respect God and do things to please Him it means that you're led by the spirit and you will have a prosperous life. (Proverbs 19:23- Reverence for God gives life, happiness, and protection from harm.)

(Matthew 10:28- "Don’t be afraid of those who can kill only your bodies—but can’t touch your souls! Fear only God who can destroy both soul and body in hell.)
We should only fear God and we shouldn't even fear death either. When you're doing right by God and obeying Him there's no longer that fear of going to hell.

Romans 5:1-11

Romans 8:1-14
Those who are led by the Spirit of God are the sons of God. It's funny because I remember someone wanted to talk to my friend and I told them that she's saved and she wants someone who is saved so she isn't interested. The boy was like it's just funny because y'all are Christians and basically discriminating when we're all Gods children and I was just thinking little do you know. If you're living a sinful life you are not God's child. God's children obey Him. Those who are in Christ are friends of God. Anyone who isn't saved and who rejects God is God's enemy. Most people don't even realize that, but you can't love the world and love God. The devil is the evil prince of the world so those who love the world love the devil.

When I wasn't saved I used to always wonder why God didn't answer my prayers. It literally would feel like He was ignoring me and I didn't know why. Or sometimes He would answer and give me what I asked for, but then it seemed like it'd be taken right away. (Proverbs 28:9- God doesn’t listen to the prayers of those who flout the law.)
James 4:1-8
This actually reminds me of what we just read in (2 Samuel 12:8- I gave you his palace and his wives and the kingdoms of Israel and Judah; and if that had not been enough, I would have given you much, much more.) If we would just ask and wait on God instead of taking things into our own hands we would avoid so many problems. If we'd just be content with what God gave us and not be greedy we would avoid so many problems. People don't have because they don't ask and sometimes the reason they do have is because they steal and kill to get it but if you had to go through all that trouble is it even worth it? People want God to give them all these things that'll only feed their flesh when we need to be feeding our spirit.

Psalms 34
Like Ecclesiastes 8:12 says those who fear God are better off. Do y'all have anyone in your life and you know they're saved and it just seems like things are always great for them, it seems like nothing bad ever happens to them and even if something bad does happen the person doesn't even stress because they know God will take care of them? Why is that? Because when you're in the will of God for your life and you're pleasing God, He always takes cares of you. Who in the Bible do you know that obeyed God that wasn't taken care of? For me it was my parents, like of course things may not have always been good for us, but they always acted like it, and that's what it means to truly trust the Lord. That you trust Him through the good and bad. When I was in the world I hated when my parents told me about myself and that I needed to get right with God because that isn't what I wanted to hear. They didn't even know that deep down I looked up to them and that I wanted to live for God and I wanted the bad stuff to stop happening to me. It's different when bad stuff happens to you when you're living for God and you trust in Him because you know He will provide for you. (Psalm 34:19- The good man does not escape all troubles—he has them too. But the Lord helps him in each and every one.) But when you're living a sinful life and the world feels like it's crashing down on you, when you're not obeying God you don't even have that guarantee that things will be okay like someone who's saved does. (1 Peter 3:12- For the Lord is watching his children, listening to their prayers; but the Lord’s face is hard against those who do evil.)

Many times in the Bible the Lord makes it known that those who are evil are His enemies. So many people don't fear God and even I didn't at one point. I knew what God could do to me and what happens to sinners but I just wanted to be free and do my own thing, I didn't want to have to answer to God. Crazy thing is we can think we're getting away with so much, but on Judgment Day we will all have to answer to God. There are all these things that have happened in the Bible to people who didn't obey God and yet people even the old me thought I could just go around doing as I please. Yes we have free will to do whatever but we must also realize that choosing to do what we want comes with consequences.

Isaiah 1
This is Just a reminder of why it's important to fear and reverence the Lord. Remember that those who fear God are better off. Also, just because you've disobeyed God and something hasn't happened to you yet doesn't mean to freely go on doing it. Remember it took 120 years until God finally sent the flood to destroy the world. Don't envy the wicked, just because things look like they're going well for them means nothing. In church last week the pastor talked about how he didn't get into business school and he didn't think that was fair because He was living for God and other people weren't that got in. The Lord reassured him that those people are in charge of their own life and God is in charge of ours. (Proverbs 15:16- Better a little with reverence for God than great treasure and trouble with it.) (Proverbs 23:17- Don’t envy evil men but continue to reverence the Lord all the time, for surely you have a wonderful future ahead of you. There is hope for you yet!)
