The Illusion

An illusion is a deceptive appearance or impression. When you trick people you’re deceiving them and that means to mislead by a false appearance or statement. When people show a picture of the devil he usually is red, with 2 horns and a pitchfork. The devil doesn’t come to you looking like that though, he comes to you looking like everything you’ve always wanted. (Revelation 12:9- And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.)

Isaiah 14:12-17

Genesis 3:1-6

It says the serpent was the craftiest of all the creatures. Crafty means clever at achieving one's aims by indirect or deceitful methods, so it’s just another word for deceive.

(John 8:44- For you are the children of your father the devil and you love to do the evil things he does. He was a murderer from the beginning and a hater of truth—there is not an iota of truth in him. When he lies, it is perfectly normal; for he is the father of liars.) The devil was a liar from the beginning and until his time is up that’s all he will be doing. The thief comes to steal, kill and destroy. (John 10:10)

God is real and the devil is fake, not meaning he doesn’t exist but that he’s counterfeit. I did a devotional about a month ago called Counterfeit Promise and talked about how the devil sends the counterfeit as a tool to distract us from the work God is doing in our lives. (Genesis 1:26- Then God said, “Let us make a man —someone like ourselves, to be the master of all life upon the earth and in the skies and in the seas.” The devil came and distracted Adam and Eve from the work God was doing in their life and they got banished from the Garden of Eden and allowed sin into the world.

Revelation 20

Just like a prostitute comes dressed appealing and tempting is exactly how the devil comes to you.

Proverbs 5

When you have a prize waiting for you there’s no time for distractions. Just think about athletes, they live, breathe, eat whatever sport it is that they’re playing and usually if you ask them how they’ve been doing they’ll say “I’m just focused on *insert sport here* It’s because they’re determined to get that prize and that’s exactly how we should be, focused on God so we can receive the prize. (Philippians 3:14- I strain to reach the end of the race and receive the prize for which God is calling us up to heaven because of what Christ Jesus did for us.) (2 Timothy 2:5- Follow the Lord’s rules for doing His work, just as an athlete either follows the rules or is disqualified and wins no prize.) This life is a race. (Matthew 24:13- But those enduring to the end shall be saved.) Will you get the prize or be disqualified? We need to keep our eyes focused on Jesus. (Hebrews 12:2- [looking away from all that will distract us and] focusing our eyes on Jesus, who is the Author and Perfecter of faith [the first incentive for our belief and the One who brings our faith to maturity], who for the joy [of accomplishing the goal] set before Him endured the cross, disregarding the shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God [revealing His deity, His authority, and the completion of His work])

Mark 4:1-19

If the devil can keep you satisfied with the things of the life, he has you right where he wants you. (1 John 2:15-16- Stop loving this evil world and all that it offers you, for when you love these things you show that you do not really love God; for all these worldly things, these evil desires—the craze for sex, the ambition to buy everything that appeals to you, and the pride that comes from wealth and importance—these are not from God. They are from this evil world itself.)

  1. What are some lies the devil tells?

  • Being a Christian is boring, it’s just a bunch of rules.

  • Makes you think your bad thoughts are yours.

  • Sin is not a big deal.

  • That’s not what God said.

  • You have a lot of time to get right with God.

This is just a reminder of how the devil operates, not to scare you, but for you to be aware of his tactics. Ask yourself: Is this from God? Does God want me to have this? Always pray for God’s Will to be done in your life because it’s so easy to be deceived and think God wants something for you when really it’s just a selfish desire or something that the devil wants you to have to deter you away from God. Ask yourself: What’s in my life that’s distracting me from God?
