Set Your Sight On Eternal Things

When you think of eternity what do you think of? We talked about this a little last week for Bible Study but many times we get so consumed with what's going on in the world and what people are doing around us. I always have to remind myself to always think of the bigger picture, which is heaven. Now I'm not saying that you can't enjoy life as a Christian because you can. But you don't have to sin to have fun and before I got saved I definitely thought the opposite. This world will literally pull you in if you allow it. Sin is everywhere, sin is advertised, it's on tv, music etc. You definitely want to hang around the right type of people. People can either influence you in a good or bad way. Remember what God told the Israelites, that He didn't want them marrying others and taking on their gods.

(Colossians 3:2- Let heaven fill your thoughts; don’t spend your time worrying about things down here.) Jesus was definitely one who set His thoughts on eternal things. While the disciples were worried about food and what they were gonna eat Jesus didn't worry because He knew God would provide for Him. Although Jesus was crucified, He had a big following. Thousands would come hear him preach and follow Him from destination to destination. One thing Jesus didn't allow Himself to do was be prideful. He could've acted way different towards everybody but Jesus didn't have time for that. Jesus was busy thinking about His reward in heaven. He was about His Father's business.

Luke 12:16-21
"Every man is a fool who gets rich on earth but not in heaven" and that is completely true. So many people brag about what they're doing and what they got going on and I just be thinking if all that was taken away from you then what? If you died tonight, then what?

How often do you think about heaven and hell?
A lie the devil tells people is that they have time to get right with God, but only God knows when you die. So if you know that you can die at any moment why would you not make sure that your relationship with God is on point. When I say on point I don't just mean that you believe in Jesus so yeah you're saved and going to heaven. Anybody can believe in Jesus, even the devil and his demons believe, but the question is are you living for God? People say that life is short so live it up, but I say life is short so make sure that you're right with God. You can all have the money and the fame but if you die and go to hell was it even worth it? (Mark 8:36- "And how does a man benefit if he gains the whole world and loses his soul in the process?) There is no benefit because if the devil has your soul because if he does then you are going to hell. The thief comes to steal, kill and destroy and he doesn't care how he does it. Ask yourself: What is the one thing I should stop doing and the one thing I should start doing today?

(Ecclesiastes 7:2- It is better to spend your time at funerals than at festivals. For you are going to die, and it is a good thing to think about it while there is still time.)(Ecclesiastes 7:4- Yes, a wise man thinks much of death, while the fool thinks only of having a good time now.) It's so important to be thinking about your future. And most people when they hear future they're thinking about retirement and having grandchildren etc, but I'm talking about your future spiritually. After you die will you be in heaven or hell? And so many people say God sends people to hell when really that's not true at all, a person sends them self to hell. If you did what God wanted you to then why would you go to hell, but if you rejected God and did what you wanted to do then of course you can't expect to be in heaven with God. It's all a choice, we have free will, where you end up for eternity is on you. You can either accept Jesus or reject Him. Someone put it this way and when I first saw it I was like wow but the quote said "would you let a stranger into your home? No right? So why would God let you in His?

Ecclesiastes 5:10-11
There's nothing wrong with having money but once you've made it your god you're in trouble. The Bible says you can't serve God and money because you will love one and hate the other. When people get money they start to think that they don't need God, but rich or not everyone needs God. I love Proverbs because it talks about the rich and poor a lot.( Proverbs 22:2-The rich and the poor are alike before the Lord who made them all.) (Proverbs 18:11- The rich man thinks of his wealth as an impregnable defense, a high wall of safety. What a dreamer!) (Proverbs 11:4- Your riches won’t help you on Judgment Day; only righteousness counts then.) (Proverbs 29:13- Rich and poor are alike in this: each depends on God for light.)
Luke 16:19-31
The rich man and Lazarus is a story that doesn't get mentioned a lot but it's very important. The rich man was rich but his riches didn't help him when it was time to die. He ended up in hell and Lazarus was in heaven. What's also important is that he wanted to warn his family of hell. Why is that people wait until it's too late to want to do the right thing? Why wait until you're already in hell to wish that you did right by God. The rich man is still currently burning in hell forever and He will never get that drop of water that he wants. When Lazarus was hungry/thirsty he didn't give him anything and I bet he regrets treating Lazarus that way til this very day.

Matthew 25:31-46
Your soul isn't something to be played with, this life is not a game. Heaven and hell is very real.

Ecclesiastes 9:1-6
"That is why men are not more careful to be good but instead choose their own mad course, for they have no hope—there is nothing but death ahead anyway." That's exactly how the devil wants you to think too, he doesn't want you to worry about your eternity, he wants you to worry about the wrong things and just our life down here, but remember that earth is not heaven. Christ gives you hope, when you have Christ in your life you have things to look forward to. God promises eternal life to all who trust in Christ to save them. (Romans 2:7-He will give eternal life to those who patiently do the will of God, seeking for the unseen glory and honor and eternal life that He offers.) In order to do the will of God for your life you must be saved. People think that because they believe Jesus is real it'll get them into heaven but the question is are you doing the will of God for your life.

What's your definition of being set apart? Set your sight on eternal things. Be set apart, don't be so concerned about what's going on in the world. We are in the world but not of it. (Leviticus 20:23-24- You must not follow the customs of the nations I cast out before you, for they do all these things I have warned you against; that is the reason I abhor them. I have promised you their land; I will give it to you to possess it. It is a land ‘flowing with milk and honey.’ I am the Lord your God who has made a distinction between you and the people of other nations.) God promised them a land flowing with milk and honey but He's promised us heaven. Distinction sets someone or something apart from others, God doesn't want us doing the sinful things that people who aren't saved are doing.

1 John 2:14-17
Let go of the world just let it go. Does that mean you can't talk to people, you can't go out, you can't watch tv, listen to music etc. No it doesn't. It's like we just read don't love the evilness in this world, there's a lot of evil but there's also a lot of God so love the good. A lot of people think being set apart means you literally can't do anything, but do you really think God would put us on earth just to say yeah don't do anything at all. Even with Adam and Eve He told them that they could eat but there was one tree that they couldn't eat from. People act like Christians are just supposed to stay in their room and just look at the four corners of their wall, read their Bible, pray and that's it. Now of course you should read your Bible and pray daily but to act like that's all a Christian can do is crazy. I always tell people that just because we're Christians doesn't mean that we have to be boring. I'm saved and I still have a lot of fun. My fun now just doesn't consist of sinning. Just because everyone else is doing it doesn't mean that you have to, it's called being set apart for a reason.
