Knowing about someone and knowing them personally are two different things and it’s the same with God, you can know about Him and still not have a personal relationship with Him.
1. What does it mean to be born again?
Being born again is to receive new life from heaven, it is a spiritual rebirth that occurs when someone accepts Jesus as Lord and Savior and repents for their sins.
Why do I have to be born again?
(Romans 5:12- When Adam sinned, sin entered the entire human race. His sin spread death throughout all the world, so everything began to grow old and die, for all sinned.) When it seemed like all hope was lost, God had a plan.
His plan was love (John 3:16- For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.) The blood of Jesus cleanses those who trust in Him to save them. Even though we are still in sinful bodies even after we get saved, God sees the blood of Jesus on us.
(Exodus 11:7- Then you will know that Jehovah makes a distinction between Egyptians and Israelites) Distinction is excellence that sets someone or something apart from others. They were set apart from the Egyptians because of the blood. The Israelites covering their homes with the blood of lambs showed God that they trusted Him and believed He would spare their first born. Jesus is the Lamb that was slain and we have to trust that He died on the cross and spared our life.
A synonym for clean is spotless. Although we are still in sinful bodies, Christ’s blood makes us spotless in God’s eyes and we’re no longer the same person. (2 Corinthians 5:17- When someone becomes a Christian, he becomes a brand new person inside. He is not the same anymore. A new life has begun!) (John 3:3AMP- Jesus answered him, I assure you, most solemnly I tell you, that unless a person is born again (anew, from above), he cannot ever see (know, be acquainted with, and experience) the kingdom of God.) (Romans 5:11- Now we rejoice in our wonderful new relationship with God—all because of what our Lord Jesus Christ has done in dying for our sins—making us friends of God.) It’s a privilege to be a friend of God.
Once you become a Christian, you’re a friend of God, but let’s not just stop there. Don’t just have a surface relationship with Him. A synonym for surface is trivial: of little or no importance. It’s time to dig deep, so we can know the heart and mind of God.
I’m God’s friend, now what?
You must seek God to know His ways. When you draw close to Him, He will draw close to you (James 4:8). The closer we get to Him the more we become like Him. (Colossians 3:10- You are living a brand new kind of life that is continually learning more and more of what is right, and trying constantly to be more and more like Christ who created this new life within you.)
2. What verse stands out to you? Why?
In order for us to learn what’s right in God’s eyes, we must be instructed. It takes humility to be like Christ because that means we’re allowing God to show us the way we should live. Even Jesus humbled Himself before God. (John 17:4- I brought glory to you here on earth by doing everything you told me to.) Jesus did everything God told Him to, not out of obligation, but because He loves God.
Following a bunch of rules (going to church, praying, paying your tithes- ARE ALL GOOD) but will not make you like Christ. It’s about the condition of our heart.
Intimacy is close familiarity or friendship; closeness. Moses was so close to God that His face shown with radiance from being in the presence of God. The Israelites didn’t want a personal relationship with God, so He gave them the law, but following a bunch of rules doesn’t equate to intimacy with Him. (Isaiah 29:13- The Lord says: "These people come near to me with their mouth and honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. Their worship of me is based on merely human rules they have been taught.)
2 Corinthians 3:14-18
Keeping the laws of God (following rules) doesn’t save, only Christ does and He’s the one who allows us to come to God. Once we get born again, we become God’s friend, we begin to seek His heart, know His ways and how He wants us to live and as we’re in His presence we become more and more like Him. This is what God wants from us, He doesn’t want us being ritualistic without a relationship with Him.
