I’ve Backslid, What Do I Do Now?

The term “backslide” refers to those who have been near to God, but have allowed sin to take them away from Him.

Some examples of backsliding are:

  • You no longer desire to pray and read the Bible. It becomes a chore instead of something that you want to do.

  • You ignore convictions

  • You no longer feel bad about sinning.

Understand that habitually sinning and slipping up are two different things. (1 John 3:9- The person who has been born into God’s family does not make a practice of sinning because now God’s life is in him; so he can’t keep on sinning, for this new life has been born into him and controls him—he has been born again.) A Christian may stumble, but they don’t live a life of sin.

Come Back Go The Father

(Isaiah 1:18- Come, let’s talk this over, says the Lord; no matter how deep the stain of your sins, I can take it out and make you as clean as freshly fallen snow. Even if you are stained as red as crimson, I can make you white as wool!) The great thing about God is that He’s waiting for you with open arms to come back to Him. He’s ready to make you clean and give you new garments. Draw near to Him and He will draw near to you.

(Acts 3:19- Now change your mind and attitude to God and turn to Him so He can cleanse away your sins and send you wonderful times of refreshment from the presence of the Lord.) Repent is to feel or express sincere regret or remorse about one's wrongdoing or sin. True sorrow leads to repentance, it causes you to go in a new direction because you’re turning away from what you’re doing. (Isaiah 1:16- Oh, wash yourselves! Be clean! Let me no longer see you doing all these wicked things; quit your evil ways.) Repent of ALL your sins, no sin is hidden from God. (Jeremiah 16:17- My eyes are on all their ways; they are not hidden from me, nor is their sin concealed from my eyes.) “The sin you refuse to address is the sin that’s killing you spiritually.”

Get Back On Fire For God

(Revelation 3:15-16- I know you well—you are neither hot nor cold; I wish you were one or the other! But since you are merely lukewarm, I will spit you out of my mouth!) Nobody likes a lukewarm drink and God doesn’t like lukewarm people. He expects Christians to be on fire for Him. I was listening to a sermon by Francis Chan and he said, “My biggest fear is that some of y’all are lukewarm and know you’re lukewarm and don’t plan on doing anything about it.” If you’re lukewarm, you need to do whatever it takes to get back on fire for God. (Romans 12:11- Never let the fire in your heart go out. Keep it alive.) To fuel the fire, we must feed our spirit.

How do I feed my spirit?

  • Read your Bible daily.

  • Pray daily.

  • Worship God daily.

Eliminate Distractions

When you’re pursuing a relationship with God there is no room for distractions. Unfortunately, there are many in the world to keep us from seeking Him, which is exactly what the devil wants, but you can’t let him win. You need to strip off anything that slows you down or holds you back, and especially those sins that wrap themselves so tightly around your feet and trip you up. (Hebrews 12:1) Ask God to remove anything that’s hindering you from strengthening your relationship with Him. You may need to take a break from social media, turn the TV off, turn the worldly music off and put on some Gospel. Make sure you’re around people that edify you and influence you to do right. You need godly community, you need people to hold you accountable because, without it, it’s easy for you to backslide. Make sure you’re in the right relationship, your boyfriend/girlfriend should be pursuing God with you.

Don’t Get Comfortable

You should never get comfortable where you are because there will always be more growing to do and things to learn. This a lifelong sanctification process, God wants us to be holy like He's holy. If your walk starts to get too easy it's probably because you're getting comfortable and not working towards growing spiritually daily. Comfortability in your walk turns to slackness which most likely leads to backsliding and after you backslide it's hard to get back to where you were.

Every day you’re alive is another day for you to get right with God. People lie to themselves when they say “I have time”. God is the only one who knows what our future holds. His perspective on time is far different from ours. That’s why the Bible says “Today is the day of salvation” because you don’t know if you’ll have another day to get right with God.

I came across a tweet that said:

  • When you’d read certain scriptures and they made you cry?

  • When you’d highlight every word?

  • When you’d listen to certain music and you’d get so wrecked by His love?

  • When you’d journal and write love letters to Jesus telling Him about your day?

Scriptures To Meditate On

(Proverbs 14:14- The backslider gets bored with himself; the godly man’s life is exciting.)

(Matthew 26:41- Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”)

(James 4:7- So give yourselves humbly to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.)

2 Chronicles 7:14- If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.)

(Romans 12:2- Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but be a new and different person with a fresh newness in all you do and think. Then you will learn from your own experience how His ways will really satisfy you.)

(1 John 1:9- If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.)

“The backslider likes the preaching that wouldn’t hit the side of a house, while the real disciple is delighted when the truth brings him to his knees.” – Billy Sunday
